Katy Rice Harvest Festival 2017
In 1978 the Tri-County Optimists wanted to put together an event to honor the Rice Farming Legacy. This event was named "Sellabration" and was held at the VFW Park. Two years later, in 1980, the Tri-County Optimists decided that Katy had outgrown the "Sellabration" and wanted to honor Katy, TX in a unique way; Katy's Rice Harvest Festival was then born!
Brad Hays, head of The Westside Art Guild, Sam Scardino, President of the Greater Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, and Lynn Cardiff, Executive Director of The Katy Chamber, teamed up and adopted "Sellabration." Brad, Sam, and Lynn envisioned a way to bring the community together, educate about rice, let farmers showcase what they do, and hold an art show. They teamed together and moved the festival to the streets of Katy's Town Square.
In 1981, Katy's Rice Harvest Festival showcased 73 booths featuring handmade items, 10 food booths, and a flatbed trailer acted as the stage for live entertainment. Charles Cardiff demonstrated the vintage, 1920's rice threshing machine, which is now showcased as an exhibit at the Katy Heritage Museum. The Katy Volunteer Fire Department replicated a high rise rescue and rappelled from Katy's Water Tower. Emily Welch was the 1st winner of Katy's Rice Cook-Off and won $100 for her main dish. Within 2 years, Katy's Rice Harvest Festival grew in attendance to 10,000 visitors! Katy & West Houston's citizens LOVED this new festival!
Today, Katy's Rice Harvest Festival's attendance is averaged to have 45,000-50,000 attendees over the 2 day event, over 300 vendor booths line the streets of Katy's Town Square, and they've replaced the flat-bed trailer stage with 2 professional stages equipped for Katy's local bands, schools, and entertainers! Today, Katy's Rice Harvest Festival is a family tradition of Katy area families to enjoy Katy's History, family gatherings, shopping, great food, and an awesome carnival for the little ones! Katy's Rice Harvest Festival is named one of Houston Area's Top 10 Festivals. I actually met my wife at the Rice Harvest Festival in 2006, so The Rice Harvest Festival holds a special place in my heart and I always make the Rice Harvest Festival weekend a priority to celebrate!
